The nursing metaparadigms involves the delivery of optimum care for optimal outcomes for the patients through mutual relationship and understanding in a safe environment (Branch et al 2016). Mutual understanding and care cannot be achieved by the nurse practitioner only, but through coordination with the doctors and other healthcare providers.For instance in nursing metaparadigm we have four concepts which include environment, person, nursing and health. These concepts in general help to define nursing metaparadigm and set it apart from other disciplines or professions for that matter. A clear line is therefore able to be drawn between nursing and physician practice.Namely, these foundational concepts are: person, environment, health, and nursing. Hence, the intent of this essay is to describe the four main concepts that make up nursing’s metaparadigm and discuss how they are used in practice, education and research.
The nursing metaparadigm is a group of statements that identifies phenomena and incorporates philosophical assumptions that guide the development of nursing theory (Fawcett, 1984). Nursing scholars have historically agreed that the central concepts of the nursing metaparadigm include person, health, environment and nursing.It provides the fundamentals of nursing practices, produces more knowledge and points the direction nursing should develop into in the future. The benefits of having a well-defined body of theory in nursing include better patient care, heightened professional prestige for nurses, improved communication among nurses and other health care workers, and guidance for research and education.
