Essay on Nurse Ratched vs Randle Patrick Mcmurphy.

The narrator explains Nurse Ratched’s state of mind after McMurphy breaks the window. She knows that she lost a battle with McMurphy but she still has good odds to win the war. After all, McMurphy lives as an involuntarily committed patient and can only leave the hospital on her say so.

Nurse Ratchet thinks she can manipulate McMurphy through her treatments of electro- shock therapy, but McMurphy overcomes it. Although Nurse Ratchet sees no power in McMurphy, the war between Ratchet and McMurphy nears its end. McMurphy is catching up to Ratched, and she knows it too but the war is in her control.

The power Nurse Ratched wields over the staff results in McMurphy’s ongoing diagnosis as mentally ill. Out in the hall all by myself, I notice how clear it is—no fog any place. It's a little cold where the nurse just went past, and the white tubes in the ceiling circulate frozen light like rods of glowing ice, like frosted refrigerator coils rigged up to glow white.

From the patients manhood to the fear in Nurse Ratched to the patients recovery, McMurphy made a difference that most likely wouldn’t have happened without his arrival. Throughout the novel, McMurphy takes the patients on a multitude of adventures, some small, some large, that progressively returns the patients “manhood” to them, after Ratched had taken it away, for lack of better words.

McMurphy is a very wise person, who was destined to change the place where he is forever. We don’t know if he’s a psychopath or not, and unfortunately, we’ll never get it. But we know for sure, that he’s is smart, likeable and he gives to the patients the ability to take back that power and strength, that a cruel Nurse Ratched stole from them with her strange and cruel rules.

The match up between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched is a raging and intense one. Through out the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, McMurphy and Nurse Ratched have always had conflict, as well as a sense of never-ending hatred and disagreement towards each other; which as the novel continues, grows stronger and stronger.

The film suggests that McMurphy’s attack on Nurse Ratched is far more than revenge for Billy Bibbit’s death: he is fighting for humanity, for the individual’s right to be loved, respected, and mourned. Previous page Important Quotations Explained page 4.

Nurse Ratched may have lost control of the ward, but she has won her battle with McMurphy, as the other men learn when he is returned to the ward: 'And one morning, after McMurphy'd been gone.

McMurphy and the others only formed a remonstration against Nurse Ratched who was not allowing the shut-ins to watch the game. This was the destructive and atrocious nature of the institution because it made the patients believe that they were truly insane and mentally instable when in fact they were sane.

Nurse Ratched holds ultimate control of the ward as well as over the patients, until Randle Patrick McMurphy's arrival. Nurse Ratched and McMurphy compete for power over the patients, but it is McMurphy's unselfish characteristics that win over the loyalty and respect of the men in the ward.

McMurphy took him aside and told him not to worry about his girl’s chastity-Turkle’d likely be so drunk and sleepy by the time Billy was finished that old coon couldn’t put a carrot in a washtub. ”(255) Nurse Ratchet tries to maintain control and power of McMurphy by her usual tactics, turning the patients against each other(in this case, against McMurphy).

Nurse Ratched A sexless, rigid caricature of a nurse, Nurse Ratched imposes discipline on her ward with all the fervour of an Army Nurse, which she had been. Large, with huge breasts only partially disguised by her ultra-stretched white uniform, she nevertheless has a pretty, delicate face that belies her cruelty.
